Climate Change Resiliency Project: Phase 5 Building the road
Our Climate Change Resiliency Project is moving along very well. At the end of this week, the lower mountain bisect road will nearly be completed. This road links the Upper Parking lot to the exit of our main catchment road from our blue and black runs. It is crucial to keep this important corridor open in periods of low snow. The rebuild of approximately 600 metres of road also addresses drainage in many of the challenging areas we had during the 2023-2024 winter.
We are very fortunate and excited to have such incredible partners involved in the project.
For safety reasons, we will close access to the base area from Monday to Friday until further notice. This transformative project would not be possible without the help of incredible community partners. We would like to take the opportunity to showcase:
The District of Kitimat and the Regional District of Kitimat Stikine: We are proud to be partnering with both districts on the Climate Change Resiliency Project. Having the two districts support the project speaks both to the project’s importance, and the regional support for tourism and recreation. Everyone, from individuals, to business to government realizes the value of healthy outdoor family-oriented activities.
RDKS has supported the ski hill on several projects. Notably the 2021-2022 parking lot expansion and equipment storage project, and more recently the recent Regional Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program, where we had an asset management plan drafted, analysis of our base are by a ski area planning firm, designs for upgrades to our water sewer treatment plant, and designs for phased additions to our day lodge.
The District of Kitimat (DOK) is a community of about 8,200 people located on the north coast of British Columbia. The community sits at the head of Douglas Channel next to Kitimat River. Indoor and outdoor recreation facilities and the surrounding wilderness provides plenty of opportunity for an active, outdoor, coastal lifestyle. DOK has also been involved in helping MMC-Shames Mountain in many other projects and programs. From funding bussing services from Kitimat to MMC-Shames Mountain, to the replacement of snowcats, or the constructions of our Green Carpet ski lift, DOK has always been proactive in supporting MMC-Shames Mountain.
