June 14, 2024 by Shames Mountain in Special Projects

This coming week at the mountain, starting June 17th, we are waiting on confirmation of when our blasting day will commence. As we we patiently wait for a date to be confirmed, we are taking the opportunity to speak about how Climate Change Resiliency Project was funded following such a challenging winter. Although more than 50% of the project funding in the form of invoice discounting, the cashflow needed for the project came from three main sources: The Prince Rupert Port Authority, the Regional District of Kitimat Stikine, and the District of Kitimat. We had previously been awarded a grant valued at $180,000 from PRPA towards our Heat Recovery Project. With the reality setting in that the execution of the heat recovery project was likely three to five years away, we approached PRPA about applying to have the funding re-allocated to a project we could execute right away, which would have immediate positive impacts on the long-term viability of our ski area. PRPA understood the long term value of the Climate Change Resiliency Project, their board of directors approved the re-allocation of funds launching the project from conception to execution. The Regional District of Kitimat Stikine contributed $50,000 and the District of Kitimat contributed $25,000 towards the project.

For safety reasons, we will close access to the base area from Monday to Friday until further notice. This transformative project would not be possible without the help of incredible community partners. We would like to take the opportunity to showcase:

Prince Rupert Port Authority – The Prince Rupert Port Authority is responsible for the overall planning, development, marketing, and management of the commercial port facilities within the Port of Prince Rupert. The Prince Rupert Port Authority understands building a strong community means contributing to the health, vitality, and prosperity of our region. To that end, the PRPA has been investing in the local and surrounding communities for several years through various programs. MMC-Shames Mountain have been recipients of the PRPA community investment fund on a number of occasions. Over the years, the PRPA Community Investment Fund has contributed over $17,500,000 in funding to over 80 community partners. We are very fortunate to have such a community minded partner in our region.

Stay Tuned for our next updates where we will be showcasing other great community driven partners.
