Blueberry Fest and Golf Scramble Thank You!
Blueberry Fest 2024
On August 10th, MMC-Shames Mountain hosted its Second Annual Blueberry Fest. A week later, on the 17th, we hosted our 5th Annual Golf Scramble in Terrace. Both events were a huge success. We had great weather, fantastic sponsors, loads of blueberries and sliced golf balls.
We estimate that approximately 500 people came through the arches in search of Blueberries at Shames. This really is a great year for berry pickers. The Shames Mountain Ski Club, a not-for-profit organization that runs training and competitive coaching programs for skiing and snowboarding, coordinated the event focused on healthy outdoor family-oriented activities. They organized colouring, stickers, temporary tattoos, bubbles and balloons for the kids. They also organized berry weigh-ins and a fun contest such as the caliper measured largest berry picked by a Child or Adult. One man picked nearly 6 kilos!
The ski club also took care of our BBQ by donation which raised approximately $1000 to go towards the MMC-Shames Mountain Northern Snow Angels Program. This program has been in place for 11 seasons and has cumulatively raised over $57,000; sponsoring approximately 2500 kids to come discover the joys of skiing. Huge thanks go out to our Double Black Diamond Sponsor, Ocean Trailer who covered to costs of the event, (food, fuel, startup and shut down costs), and Fountain Tire who provided the BBQ. The garage sale also generated some sales. Two 40-foot shipping containers full of tools and office furnishings were donated to MMC-Shames Mountain by Besix Canada. After upgrading screens office chairs, tables and several of of the ski hills hand tools. The remainders of the container contents were sold to at our garage sale and have generated $1,500 in profit.
5th Annual Terrace Shred Scramble
The 5th annual Terrace Golf Scramble was a sold-out affair. 19 teams golfed with various levels of experience, but all with the same levels of fun. The event raised over $30,000 before expenses. The funds were raised through sponsors, entry fees, a silent auction and other cheeky advantages purchased at the scramble. Kelly Gingles, the Chair of our Board of Directors, and a decent golfer we might add, coordinated the event masterfully. Kelly organised this event with much less support than in previous years and knocked it out of the park. Sponsorship is key to running a successful event. We are very fortunate to have a thriving business community that understands the importance of good wholesome family oriented recreational opportunities like skiing. The Golf Scramble had two Double Black Diamond sponsors:
Ocean Trailer is new to the northwest with their Port Edward location opened in September 2023. They are Western Canada’s Trailer Specialist. With other locations in Delta, Mission, Nanaimo, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg, they can meet all trailer needs. They buy, sell, lease, rent, service and supply parts for commercial trailers. MMC-Shames Mountain’s strong community values and focus on families resonated well with the family-owned Ocean Trailer. They contributed $5,000 towards each event as a Double Back Diamond sponsor.
Tourism Terrace is the official community destination management organization for Terrace, BC. They collaborate with partners throughout the greater Terrace area, and beyond, to support the tourism industry, our community, and visitors. Their purpose is to share the WOW of Terrace with everyone. Shames certainly represents one of the region’s major WOW factors. Promoting our world class skiing facility and other local activities is what they do. They contributed $5,000 towards the Golf Scramble event as a Double Black Diamond sponsor.
Finning Canada, Blue Fin and Thornhill Subaru, stepped up to be $1,000 Blue Square sponsor for the golf scramble.
The $500 green sponsors of the golf event were:
- Tri-City Refrigeration
- Evolve Yoga
- Aqua Plumbing
- OB Ventures
- Sherwood Brewing
- Northwest Fuels
- All-Star Shoes
- Unbound Gear & Apparel
- Ascent Coffee
