January 9, 2025 by Shames Mountain in News

Dear Friends,

A good ski industry friend of mine described every ski season like getting onto a random rollercoaster. Sometimes the ride is predictable, easy, almost boring. On other occasions, it can be thrilling and exciting from start to finish. This season, the ride is unpredictable, and full of surprises, we missed the warning that: “you may get wet on this ride”. Unfortunately, the freezing levels have not been cooperating.

On Sunday January 5th, our Multicultural Weekend, sponsored by LNG Canada, we had 1031 guests, while offering a 10 out of 10 winter experience. This was the most guests we have ever counted at the hill in the Co-op era.

Today on January 9th it is +3 degrees and has been pouring rain all the way to the top of the ski area, and we have 43 guests. The high traffic areas are eroding fast and need immediate attention. The rain is forecasted to switch to snow sometime this afternoon.

To ensure we will be able to open the ski hill on January 11th and 12th, lift access to Shames Mountain will be closed on Friday January 10th.  During this time, our team will work on improving drainage in key areas.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their continued support. We would also like to thank all the businesses involved with last summer’s Climate Change Resiliency Project once again. Had we not completed this project, we would still be waiting to open the Ski Area. Instead, we have had a very successful Christmas break.

Our partners included on Climate Change Resiliency Project valued at approximately $640,000 are:
