Dear Friends,
Leaves have started to turn and the excitement for the upcoming snowy winter is building.
Following the character building 2023-24 ski season, and the transformative Climate Change Resiliency Project, we are now moving into the pre-season stages of operating a ski hill. Maintenance is doing their annual checks and repairs, manuals are being updated, and we are getting ready to onboard our fresh staff arriving later in November.
As we have moved into the Last Chance 10% off Sale (on until Oct. 31), we felt it was an appropriate time to remind everyone about our 3 for 1 Post Secondary Student Pass and why we reverted to a 3 for 1 method.
We originally created the 3 for 1 Post Secondary Student Pass back in 2012. This concept was giving a discounted pass to students while promoting more seasons pass sales.
If 3 students bought together, they collectively paid the price of one adult season pass. Finding a couple friends to buy passes with meant you could get your pass at an unheard of 66% discount.
Sometime ago, we dropped the 3 for 1 aspect. The argument was that by dropping the challenging aspect, we would sell more passes.
The result of dropping the 3 for 1 aspect was not what we expected. Since the change, there has been a net reduction of 35% in the number of student passes sold.
The MMC-Shames Mountain Pricing Committee meets each spring to review the ski hill’s financial position and recommend their changes to management and BOD. They recommended going back to a 3 for 1 system. It is more work both for the guest and for the mountain staff, however, a 66% discount is worth working for. As is driving towards our old 3 for 1 target for pass sales. The 3 for 1 approach also drove word of mouth marketing.
A Community is defined as a body of people or things viewed collectively. A cooperative is an organization owned and operated for the benefit of those using its services. This strategy aims to engage our community service cooperative to work together toward giving students a break on pricing, and having more students from any post-secondary institution, visit MMC-Shames Mountain.
Sincerely
