Thanks to a new partnership between My Mountain Co-op and the public libraries in Terrace, Prince Rupert and Kitimat, patrons across the region will soon have the ability to check out day passes for Shames Mountain to enjoy a day of skiing or snowboarding, just like patrons can check out books.
Beginning January 6, 2022, the Terrace Public Library, the Kitimat Public Library and the Prince Rupert Public Library will each have four dated day passes available for every operating day for the rest of the 2021-22 season at Shames Mountain.
Like other items the public libraries lend, the day passes can be checked out for the day, free of charge, valid on the day they will be used. Each pass will be dated, and only good on that one day. These day passes are exempt from the daily cap at Shames Mountain.
“We recognize that downhill skiing and snowboarding can be an expensive sport for families, and we want to ensure that everyone who wants to discover skiing at Shames Mountain has the opportunity to do so,” says My Mountain Co-op board member, Dave Gordon.
“We are excited to partner with My Mountain Co-op to loan out day passes. These passes help to reduce barriers, and make it easier for more community members to discover skiing. We are excited to add local experiences to our Library of Things collection,” says Fiona Bruce, director of the Terrace Public library.
Each public library involved in the partnership can be contacted for details on how to check out the day passes.
“A wonderful gesture from those at Shames Mountain who made this happen; I know our patrons will appreciate their enormous generosity. To be outdoors having fun and exercise in the snow and sunshine is exactly what we want and need this winter,” says Virginia Charron, Library Director at the Kitimat Public Library. “Thank you on behalf of the Kitimat Public Library!”
This new endeavour is part of several initiatives that My Mountain Co-op has rolled out to make Shames Mountain accessible for everyone.
These include:
- Season Passes for Junior Skiers (aged 7-12) are just $99 for co-op members
- Children aged 6 and under are free; and
- The Snow Angels program that provides free lift tickets, lessons and rentals for children and youth in schools who may not be able to afford to come with their group.
- The conveyor belt lift is always free, helping families discover skiing and snowboarding on a safe, easy beginner slope
